Engaging visitors and communities with wetlands

About The Role

At WWT we believe the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close and let it do the talking. People feel part of something amazing and are motivated to make a difference.

By providing an excellent visitor experience as a member of the Living History team, you will be bringing the history of the Mere to life by delivering key messages about how important wetlands are for food, materials, medicine, and livelihoods. This encourages our visitors to make the most of their visit to Martin Mere, and to understand and support our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team, and we wouldn’t be able to maintain our internationally important wetland sites without their help. You will receive a very warm welcome, full induction & training, and be provided with any necessary equipment, uniforms, and anything else needed to thrive in your role.

Main tasks

  • Undertaking talks and hands-on activities about how useful wetlands are - specifically about villagers settling next to wetlands 1000 years ago to provide them with food, materials for shelter, medicine and items to trade.
  • Undertaking talks about the history and development of the Martin Mere site.
  • Assisting with visitor activities on school holidays and weekends.
  • Communicating WWT conservation messages and membership during talks about how people in places such as Madagascar still make settlements next to wetlands for their livelihoods.

About You

No previous experience is required for this role as full training will be provided, and a willingness to learn new skills is more important.

However, this role would suit you if:

  • You have a good knowledge of local history and are familiar with the site
  • You have an interest in and enthusiasm for WWT’s work
  • You feel confident in talking to and engaging with members of the public, including giving talks
  • You can adapt your communication style to suit your audience
  • You enjoy working as part of a team of staff and volunteers
  • You have a strong commitment to excellent customer service
  •  You are friendly and approachable with a positive attitude
